English 302    Business Communication

Twice during the semester, you will be required to lead a three- to five-minute presentation in front of the class, explaining a chosen concept from the class handbook. You must e-mail me your PowerPoint presentation by midnight on Sunday before the Tuesday you present.

Choosing a Topic
Before you present your topic to the class, you need to discuss it with me in class. This will ensure you do not try to explain too much during this short presentation and that we do not have duplicate presentations. Choose something that helps explain to your classmates the technical aspects of English, such as grammar, punctuation, syntax, editing, etc.

When choosing your presentation topic, think of concepts that could be useful to you and the class. Do not try to cover information like proposal-writing, as that is quite a large bit of information that we will be covering as part of the English 302 curriculum. For these presentations, you can choose simple topics, such as:

  • parallel sentence construction
  • double negatives
  • verb mood
  • the difference between:
    • affect / effect
    • allude / elude / refer
    • emphasis / italics / underlining
    • farther / further
    • good / well
    • insure / ensure / assure
    • lay / lie
    • than / then
    • their / there / they're
    • to / too / two
    • was / were
    • who / whom
  • reflexive pronouns
  • how to use semicolons
  • proofreading marks and strategies

Preparing Your Presentation
In presenting this information, you should have one to two slides (overhead or PowerPoint, depending on classroom or computer lab day) summarizing your information. Be sure to check the notes on Creating Presentations in preparation for these presentations. Essentially, you will want to have the main topics for your presentation in your slides, as you discuss / teach the information with / to the class.

Evaluation
For me to evaluate your presentation, you will either turn in your overheads after your presentation (if in the classroom) or e-mail me your PowerPoint slideshow prior to class (if in the computer lab).
