"Art on Campus" Re-Design
Considering the visual design concepts we discussed in class, re-design the "Art on Campus" brochure.

You may create a flyer, brochure, pamphlet, table-tent, poster, newsletter, etc. using the information from the original "Art on Campus" brochure. If you have another idea for a medium in which to create this document, talk to me first, but other ideas are also allowed.

We'll be working in the computer lab (Maple-Willow-Larch Commons, upstairs in Room C3114) for the next few days of class so you have time and software to create your documents. Here is a list of software that is available on those computers:

  • Adobe ImageReady
  • Adobe PageMaker
  • Adobe PhotoShop
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Microsoft Word
you may also use other programs, but they may not be available in the lab we are in. No, you cannot skip class if you are working on the project using a specific program on your computer. If you are designing at home, find other things you can work on in class:
  • brainstorm with your partner about the different ways you could approach this assignment; sketch drafts
  • collaborate with other groups, looking at their ideas and sharing yours; you may be able to get some new perspectives...
  • search for images you could use from the Art on Campus Collection website
  • you can even use this time to work on your discussion topic

Presenting Your Work
When we hand these projects in on Tuesday, each group will be given two minutes to discuss their design choices. This of this as an opportunity to explain why you chose certain designs / layouts / trade-offs (e.g. sacrificing detail for conciseness) / etc. and argue for your the effectiveness of your design. Be sure to prepare and be organized; two minutes is not a very long time...

Examples
Here are a couple examples of documents I made for classes in the past:

  • Class Schedule I & Class Schedule II—two documents using different methods of displaying a class schedule; compare the two... what are the pros and cons of each document?
  • ABC Conference Schedule—similar to the "Art on Campus" flyer, without pictures; what does this document do well? poorly?
  • Picture Design—instructions for using an animal-tracking device, without words; are you able to follow the directions without words?

Color Printing
If you want to print in color for free*, just go to Durham 139 (the big computer lab on the ground floor) and ask somebody at the help desk there how to print your document in color.
*Of course nothing is free; technically you're paying for this. However, the printing-in-color charges at Durham are subtracted from the computer fee you already pay each semester anyway. So, since you're paying for the fee anyway, you might as well use it here...

"Art on Campus" Text
Below is the text from the brochure so you can just copy and paste, or you can right-click this link and save the text file, without having to re-type the entire original document:
