English 314    Technical Communication
Using information, data, and images from various Internet sources, compose a memo with a partner that explains a simple aspect, concept, or process of our Solar System.

Incorporating Visuals
The purpose of this assignment is not so much to be comprehensive in your explanation or demonstrate / gain knowledge of the Solar System; the real purpose here is to practice properly incorporating various types of visuals into your technical documents. Therefore, be sure to choose a topic that can be enhanced with images. In order to demonstrate understanding of formatting of all types of visuals, you will need to incorporate three different visuals in your document: (1) one table or chart; (2) one image, figure, picture, photograph, drawing, sketch, etc.; and (3) one visual of your choice.

Read through various sites on the Internet (some links provided below) and think of some chunk of information you would like to present in your memo. Once you've chosen the information you wish to present, find a way you can enhance that information visually. You may want to include information such as:

  • a table with various bits of data on each of the planets, such as distance from the Sun, orbit time, etc.
  • a diagram showing the orbits of the different planets
  • an image of a particular planet and an interesting feature of that planet (like the Great Red Spot on Jupiter)
  • a picture showing the irregular orbit of Pluto
  • a drawing of constellations, showing the stars that compose certain constellations
When you submit this assignment, please do the following:
  • put each of your group members' names in the actual memo
  • save your file using your group members' names as the file name:  Name1Name2Name3.doc
(be sure to add the ".doc" at the end of your file name, and don't use any spaces between the names)
  • e-mail the document to me (klotz@iastate.edu) and each of your group members
