"The superior man... does not set his mind either for or against anything, he will pursue whatever is right. The superior man thinks of virtue, the common man of comfort."

Plato's Lost Socratic Dialogue: MillerBad Idea

Greg:It is a rather hot day, O Socrates; it is quite humid, there is no breeze, and there are no trees under which to find shelter from the suns piercing rays. Let me get you a cool Miller Lite, in order that we may find refuge from this summer heat.
Socrates:Thank you, Greg, for a Miller Lite sounds quite refreshing about now. I drink it for the great taste, you know.
Greg:So I have heard, but do you know that you should drink it because it is less filling?
Socrates:Is that so?
Greg:Yes. The average light beer has around 110 calories, whereas Miller Lite has only 96, which allows you to drink it without slowing you down.
Socrates:So you're saying I should drink it because it's less filling, then?
Greg:It would appear so.
Socrates:Let me ask you this. Is water not less filling than Miller Lite? In fact, does water not have zero calories?
Greg:This is true, but water is not a beer.
Socrates:But you would agree with me that it is less filling?
Greg:Yes, I would.
Socrates:And would you not also agree that Diet Coke, with just one calorie, would also be less filling than Miller Lite and it's 96 calories?
Greg:Yes, I would also agree to that, but again, it is not a fine-tasting brew.
Socrates:And toilet water, would you agree with me that toilet water also contains fewer calories than Miller Lite?
Greg:O, Socrates, I do not see where you are going with this, and I am rather disgusted right about now. Why do you ask me of such things?
Socrates:I know one would not normally drink toilet water, but since it is composed of mostly water (unless you use a Vanish Drop-in), would you not say it has fewer calories than Miller Lite?
Greg:I suppose.
Socrates:But you would not drink it for its taste?
Greg:I would think not!
Socrates:But it is less filling than Miller Lite. Surely, you should drink it because it is less filling. Am I not right?
Greg:Never have I tried such a thing, less filling or not.
Socrates:So, you would avoid toilet water because of its taste?
Greg:Absolutely.
Socrates:Then you would concede that the taste of your drink is important.
Greg:Yes, I suppose I would, but not as important as it being less filling.
Socrates:But we have just seen that Miller Lite is better tasting than toilet water, but you would choose toilet water over Miller Lite because it is less filling?
Greg:Certainly not.
Socrates:Then you must agree that you drink Miller Lite because of its great taste?
Greg:Wow, I believe I would, Socrates, but all of this philosophical debate has left my mind confused.
Socrates:Not to worry, Greg, I have another Miller Lite on hand for each of us.
