Writing for the World Wide Web
Useful Software
This list is by no means the only software available to use, but these are some programs that I really like. They are easy to use and have some handy features.
  PC Macintosh
HTML Editors Notepad—a free text editor that comes with most PC Operating Systems (e.g. Windows 95/98/ME).

Arachnophilia—a free HTML editor that color codes your HTML tags, offers shortcuts in manipulating text or creating tables, allows searching through multiple HTML pages, and other useful options, like the Tip of the day.

SimpleText—a free text editor that comes with the Macintosh OS.

BBEdit—a free HTML editor that color codes your HTML tags, offers shortcuts in manipulating text or creating tables, allows searching through multiple HTML pages, and other useful options.

WYSIWYG Editors CoffeeCup—a free WYSIWYG editor that generates your HTML code for you, allowing you to add headings, links, images, and more, without needing to code the HTML by hand. Freeway—a free WYSIWYG editor that generates your HTML code for you, allowing you to add headings, links, images, and more, without needing to code the HTML by hand. This is a 30-day trial software, but may still be a good tool for HTML development.
Graphics Editors MS Paintbrush—a free graphics editor that comes with most PC OSs. Paint is a really good, basic editor for things like drawing, but it doesn't allow you the option to save your files as .gif or .jpg images.

LView Pro—a graphics editor that offers effects like shading, color manipulation, and resizing; Lview does allow you to save your files as .gif or .jpg images.

Graphic Converter—a really good, basic editor for things like drawing, and it also offers effects like shading, color manipulation, and resizing. Graphic Converter does allow you to save your files as .gif or .jpg images. This program basically has the best of MS Paintbrush and LView Pro combined.
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Programs WS_FTP—a file transfer program that allows you to take files from your computer and upload them to your website or download files from your website to your computer. You can also download this from this alternate site.

Microsoft Internet Explorer—actually, MSIE can also be used as an FTP program, not just as an Internet browser.

Fetch—a file transfer program that allows you to take files from your computer and upload them to your website or download files from your website to your computer. You can also download this from this alternate site or this alternate site (Fetch 3.0.3—free).
